Publication Guidelines

Introduction

Australian Science is a not for profit science publication based in Australia focusing on the promotion of scientific thought through an active online community.

Purpose

To help writers share great scientific ideas, insights and oddities.

Vision

To become the place scientifically minded people come to share their interests and ideas with the world.

Mission

To create a platform that allows writers an easy means of sharing their ideas with the world whilst giving them an opportunity to demonstrate their writing abilities. Readers should be informed and writers should be proud to share their work.

Topics

We are happy to accept writing on a broad range of topics broadly associated with science, scientific thinking and research. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Astronomy
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Ecology
  • Geography
  • Geology
  • Linguistics
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Zoology
  • Education
  • News about any of the above or the field of science in general.

If there are other topics you think might be relevant but not included in this list, please get in touch with the community curator to make a suggestion.

Quality

It is important to the community that we ensure a high standard of quality for all content on the site. There are a couple of ways we objectively measure this:

  1. Spelling, Grammar and Structure

It goes without saying that spelling and grammar should be of a high standard. We will make corrections where appropriate, but with a limited team of curators, making edits to all submissions is impractical. Please try to ensure spelling and Grammar is of a high standard.

We also like to make sure articles avoid superfluous wording and generally “get to the point”. A tool you can use to help you with the process of making your writing more concise is Hemingway App and we encourage all writers check their own work using this tool before submitting.

  2. Length

Whilst generally not a problem, we’re looking for all articles to be over around 500 words. Shorter than this is generally not enough to address a topic fully. If you have a piece that is less than this, but you think would not benefit from further explanation, please ask the curator.

  3. Sources & Linking

All assumptions and assertions should be referenced and a link to the information or a proper citation included. Articles without credible sources will be reviewed but may not be published.

Sources of Inspiration

Stuck and looking for some topics of discussion? We’ve collected some questions people have asked on other websites: http://goo.gl/xx7cTb

Have you read something recently that interested you but that might be too technical for a laymen? Consider writing a simplified explanation to help other people understand the topic better.
